Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown met with reporters Monday to discuss a shooting that took place over the weekend in which a 17-year-old black male was shot by police.

The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded the Salt Lake City Police Department a grant worth more than $1.8 million. The grant will allow the department to hire 15 new officers.

Dozens of people gathered at the Salt Lake City Public Safety Building Saturday afternoon to voice concern over the death of James Dudley Barker, an Avenues man who was shot by a Salt Lake City Police Officer on Thursday.

Salt Lake City Police are asking the public for help finding the person or people responsible for vandalizing a Roman Catholic high school and church over the weekend.

Officers responded on Sunday afternoon to reports of vandalism at Judge Memorial High School as well as Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church just south of it.  When they arrived, Police Sgt. Robin Heiden says there was spray paint on large areas of both buildings that included anti-religious phrases, swear words, an upside down cross and the words West High.

Law enforcement officer from local and federal agencies are meeting in Salt Lake this week to share strategies for preventing crime.

The Violent Crimes Conference is a gathering of more than 200 law enforcement professionals including representatives from the FBI, West Valley police and Unified Police departments.  There they will share case studies and best practices.  Detective Matt Evans is the conference director.  He says one crime in particular is increasing along the Wasatch Front.
