Provo Road Sign Hacked to Read Anti-Gay Message
An electronic road sign in Provo was hacked earlier this week and programmed to read an anti-gay message.
The words “God Hates Gays” flashed on an electronic route sign on University Avenue just outside Provo Towne Center Tuesday evening.
“This sign was very offensive and we want to make sure this never happens again,” Says Leigh Dethman, a spokesperson for the I-15 core project.
She says the sign was re-programmed between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. when the contractor took it down.
“Because the sign wasn’t accessed remotely and there is no video from the area, we don’t know who did this,” she says.
Dethman says the Utah Department of Transportation has launched an investigation.
She wouldn’t say whether or not other signs have been compromised in the past but says one time is one too many.
“These signs are so important in communicating road construction and traffic messages to keep the public informed and safe,” she says.
Dethman says UDOT is assessing all 40 project signs to make sure they’re properly secure.
