Monday, December 12: Celebrating the Holidays in America

By Doug Fabrizio

Salt Lake City, UT – In the 1780s, John Newton - writer of the hymn Amazing Grace - complained that Handel's Messiah had become less about the spiritual contemplation of the message, and more about the "commemoration of Handel." The argument about how secularized "the season" should be is still with us ... from debates about "Holiday Trees" and "Season Greetings" to what songs should be sung at school pageants. Where is the balance between an authentic celebration of a religious holiday, and inclusion of all citizens in a pluralistic society?
