A new Salt Lake City mayor was sworn in to office today. Former Utah State Representative Jackie Biskupski joined her fiancée Betty Iverson and their son’s Jack and Archie as she took the oath of office to be the next mayor of Salt Lake City. With a thick haze in the air, she promised to combat pollution and improve mobility by completing a city-wide transit master plan.

“Improving our air quality will be at the core of every decision and policy we make,” Biskupski said.

She also touched on economic development.

“From permits to building codes, we must create a stable and streamlined process that allows for responsible growth and opportunity for new and existing businesses,” Biskupski said.

And she said economic prosperity would spill into all areas of the city, including the west side.

“When it comes to opportunity, we will not allow a freeway to divide us,” she said.

The mayor said arts and culture will be a key component in her economic development plan.

District 2 Council Member Andrew Johnston, District 4 Council Member Derek Kitchen and re-elected District 6 Councilman Charlie Luke were also sworn in.

Biskupski beat two-term incumbent Mayor Ralph Becker in the November election. It was the first time a sitting Salt Lake City Mayor had been defeated.
