The City of South Salt Lake has fewer parks and green space than most cities in Salt Lake County. That’s why South Salt Lake Mayor Cheri Wood says the city’s new playground is so important to her community. Wood says McCall Park, located at 3702 south 250 east was born out of an effort to get more kids into preschool. In the meantime, city officials discovered a large number of those young children lived nearby a detention basin. Wood says the city immediately began working to transform the basin into a playground, which is now called the McCall Tot Lot.
“The playground is appropriate for toddler-age children," Wood says. "We added some park benches in there and a picnic table, all through donations and volunteers.”
Volunteers with General Electric, United Way, K2 The Church and others stepped up to pay for and build the McCall Tot Lot. It features new playground equipment, painting, landscaping and solar lights.
Wood says there are only three parks located in her city of about 23,000 residents.
“So anytime we have an opportunity to add green space, maintain or preserve green space in our community, it’s a priority," Wood says. "So this is an opportunity to make better use of a lot in one of our neighborhoods.”
Families are invited to attend a ribbon cutting at McCall Park on Monday at 5:30.
