Google Fiber Begins Construction in Salt Lake City

Jun 10, 2015

Google Fiber is one step closer to entering homes in Salt Lake City. Residents will soon see Google workers digging holes and stringing wires as they begin the construction phase of their rollout of fiber internet service.

Devin Baer is the Salt Lake City Google Fiber project manager. He says city officials were a huge help in expediting the planning process.

“They were able to give us all of the data that we needed on where the existing infrastructure was," he says. "So, huge credit to Salt Lake and its leaders for getting that information to us timely, which allowed us to design really quickly.”

The network of fiber cables will create a circle around Salt Lake City. It will contain more than 600 miles of cable. Once completed, that ring will allow Google to easily extend access to the neighborhoods they decide are ready. Google does not know yet how long construction will take and when they will begin to first offer service to residents.
