Elf the Musical opens next week on stage at Pioneer Theater Company in Salt Lake City. It’s the first time the production has been done in Utah since the contemporary classic film Elf was released 10 years ago. Pioneer Theater’s Artistic Director, Karen Azenberg says “family” is at the heart of the story, and believing in something good.
“Isn’t that a wonderful holiday kind of message wrapped up in a contemporary story, so I think for our kids now it doesn’t feel old fashioned. And I think that’s part of its success,” says Azenberg.
She says audiences should expect the musical to be slightly different than the movie but all the great characters are still there, including Buddy the Elf, Jovie, Walter Hobbs, and course, Santa.
“Plus, really incredible costumes and the sets…you know it’s a whole big extravaganza and I think, to some degree, people expect that at Pioneer Theater. But I also think in some ways we surprise everybody with the kinds of things we’re able to do,” says Azenberg.
Elf the Musical opens Friday, December 6th and runs Monday through Saturdays, including matinees, through Christmas Eve. (No Sunday performances) Tickets are available at Pioneer Theater Company's Website or by phone: 801-581-6961.
