Jackie Biskupski is leading the race for Salt Lake City Mayor, but it may take a couple more weeks to determine a clear winner.
At last check, Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker trailed former Democratic State Representative Jackie Biskupski by five percentage points. Becker stopped short of a concession speech Tuesday evening, saying he’s still hopeful he will have the opportunity to continue serving as mayor.
“My administration have a lot to be proud of and the residents of Salt Lake City have much to look forward to,” Becker said. “The changes that have happened and will continue for some time have created a new Salt Lake City, one that is respectful of our history and traditions and is moving forward.”
Biskupski told supporters at her election night watch party in Sugar House that she’s ready to take office to make sure the voice of the people will be heard.
“It’s time for us to know that we can make a difference,” Biskupski said. “And we will work together and we will move forward together. Stay with me. Stay strong. We are confident we will win this race. And I hope you’ll be with me on the 17th when those final numbers are decided.”
Becker was elected Salt Lake City Mayor in 2007. His tenure has focused largely on creating a more walkable, bicycle-friendly downtown. He also paved the way for the first non-discrimination ordinance in the state. In addition to serving in the state legislature, Biskupski was a top administrator at the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.
