University of Utah law professor and former U.S. District Court Judge Paul Cassell has joined the defense team for the former West Valley City Police detective who shot and killed Danielle Willard.

The West Valley City Civil Service Commission has overturned the demotion of Lt. John Coyle, the former head of the now disbanded Neighborhood Narcotics Unit.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says he’s got a lot of work left to do in the office. That’s why he announced today he’s seeking re-election. 

The Democrat says in his last term he jealously guarded taxpayer dollars, balanced four budgets and dramatically reduced annual debt.

“These efficiencies are saving hundreds thousands of dollars each year for the Salt Lake County taxpayer,” Gill says. “Daily we do more with less waste in more efficient ways.”

The West Valley City Police Department has announced the results of an audit of its former sex crimes unit. The audit focused on an allegation that a large number of cases last year were left uninvestigated, and that a member of the unit had inappropriately closed cases without following protocol.

West Valley City officials announced Tuesday; they’ve hired a police chief out of Kentucky to lead the city’s embattled police department.  Lee Russo, former Chief of the Covington Kentucky Police Department will replace retired West Valley City Police Chief Buzz Nielson.

West Valley City Manager Wayne Pyle says Chief Russo brings a great deal of wisdom to the West Valley City police department.

Seven candidates for Mayor of West Valley City are now running campaigns. That long list may be a good sign the city is set to put an equa lly long list of struggles behind it. From where I’m standing near the new Fairbourne TRAX station in West Valley City, on the water stairs in the park next to the TRAX station, facing east I see the newly restored Valley Fair Mall bustling with shoppers, right in front of me the City Offices and the beautiful new Embassy Suites Hotel is to my left just beyond the TRAX line.

Last week Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill determined that two West Valley City detectives were not justified in their shooting of an unarmed woman. In response, the County’s GOP Chairman Chad Bennion offered some harsh criticism of Gill that isn’t sitting well with some.
