Utah's Municipal Election Turnout Lags

On Tuesday November 7th, Utahns around the state will have a chance to vote in local elections. It’s also the time to fill former Congressman Jason Chaffetz’s seat in the 3rd Congressional District. So far, turnout of mail-in ballots is low.

The Salt Lake County Clerk wants you to vote. Registered voters should have received a ballot to complete and return to Sherrie Swensen’s office.

The Salt Lake County Clerk released its final election results on Tuesday night, two weeks after the general election.

 

A recount is expected in the House District 32 race between incumbent Republican Lavar Christensen and his Democratic challenger Suzanne Harrison.

 

Harrison was trailing by six votes over the weekend and in the final tally, came up just three short. The Utah Democratic Party announced it will formally request a recount.

Election officials are warning of long lines this week as only a third of Utahns have taken advantage of early voting and mail-in balloting.

Starting next week, voters in 20 of Utah’s 29 counties will begin to receive their primary ballots in the mail, and county clerks want to make sure voters know what to expect.

Leaders of the Utah Democratic Party have filed a complaint with the Lt. Governor’s office about letters county clerks are sending to unaffiliated voters asking them which primary ballot they’d like to receive.

Davis County Will Vote by Mail

  Davis County is trying a vote-by-mail system for the primary election this spring and the general election in the fall.

Voters in Davis County received letters last week telling them about the changes.  Election Manager Brian McKenzie says ballot packets will be mailed out 28 days before each election.  When they come back, they’ll be verified using a bar code and by comparing the voter’s signature to their registration forms.
