As winter weather nears, Utah Department of Transportation tow plow truck drivers are preparing to tackle snow when it falls.

A tow plow is a 30 ft long trailer that a regular plow truck pulls. It works by swinging out into another lane, effectively doubling the amount of snow a plow can move. It’s also one of the most difficult things to drive on the road.

“You know, you’ve got your front plow, your sanders, your spreaders, the tow plow, you’re shifting gears.”

Jason Davis is UDOT Director of Operations. He says snowplows need to run as well as emergency medical services.

“If you think about a snowplow, you want them to react when they’re needed,” says Davis. “You know, we kind of think of them a little bit like an ambulance. You don’t want an ambulance to have to go out there and defrost the windows and everything—you want, when they’re needed, for them to be able to respond

The public comment deadline has passed on Utah Department of Transportation’s proposal to build a freeway from Farmington to Hooper.  Critics of the West Davis Corridor say UDOT needs to back up and take another look.

Steve Erickson is with a group promoting another alternative, the so-called “Shared Solution.”  It would scrap the freeway and instead improve east-west routes across the county leading to FrontRunner and I-15.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is open to traffic again after several rockslides blocked the roads this morning. Utah Department of Transportation work crews began clearing the slides from the roads around 3:30 a.m. The major slides occurred about halfway up the canyon and covered the roads with rocks, mud, and debris. At the worst location, runoff water also caused parts of the shoulder to break away from the road. Still, UDOT spokesperson Adan Carrillo says no significant damage was done to the road.

After a nationwide search Governor Gary Herbert has appointed Carlos Braceras as the new director of the Utah Department of Transportation.

Braceras has worked for UDOT for almost 27 years and until today’s appointment had spent the past 12 as UDOT’s deputy director working directly under former director, John Njord. Braceras says as the new head of UDOT one of his main focuses will be to create better relationships with local communities.
