Former Utah Attorneys General Mark Shurtleff and John Swallow made their first court appearance today as defendants against several charges of corruption and bribery.

Shurtleff and Swallow’s initial appearance in the Third District Court was brief. It lasted about 3 minutes. The two stood together and waived the reading of the 23 charges Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill has brought against them.

Before entering the court, Shurtleff spoke briefly with a large crowd of reporters. He said he’s been receiving a lot of support.

Utah officials have arrested former Utah Attorneys General Mark Shurtleff and John Swallow on multiple state felony charges.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says he’s got a lot of work left to do in the office. That’s why he announced today he’s seeking re-election.

The Democrat says in his last term he jealously guarded taxpayer dollars, balanced four budgets and dramatically reduced annual debt.

“These efficiencies are saving hundreds thousands of dollars each year for the Salt Lake County taxpayer,” Gill says. “Daily we do more with less waste in more efficient ways.”

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office and the Davis County Attorney’s office have filed six felony charges against Timothy Lawson. Lawson is an associate of Former Attorneys General Mark Shurtleff and John Swallow and is sometimes referred to as a “Fixer.” Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill says the charges suggest Lawson engaged in consistent criminal activity.

Several investigations into Utah Attorney General John Swallow will continue to move forward despite his resignation from office.

Democratic Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill and Republican Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings have been investigating Swallow since early this year. They’re trying to determine if he’s violated any state laws, specifically those against selling influence. Because of that, Gill says Swallow’s resignation will have little, if any, effect on what they’re doing.

Utah Republican Party chairman James Evans addressed the media today about inflammatory comments made by Salt Lake County GOP Chairman Chad Bennion. Evans’ comments come more than a week after Bennion first said that District Attorney Sim Gill might be a cop hater and then helped promote a rally aimed against him.

Seven candidates for Mayor of West Valley City are now running campaigns. That long list may be a good sign the city is set to put an equa lly long list of struggles behind it. From where I’m standing near the new Fairbourne TRAX station in West Valley City, on the water stairs in the park next to the TRAX station, facing east I see the newly restored Valley Fair Mall bustling with shoppers, right in front of me the City Offices and the beautiful new Embassy Suites Hotel is to my left just beyond the TRAX line.

Last week Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill determined that two West Valley City detectives were not justified in their shooting of an unarmed woman. In response, the County’s GOP Chairman Chad Bennion offered some harsh criticism of Gill that isn’t sitting well with some.
