Capping off recent visits from almost all of the presidential candidates, Republican Ted Cruz spent time with voters in Utah over the weekend. 

Cruz made two stops in the state on Saturday. Between rallies in Draper and Provo he responded to reporters’ questions.  Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said last week that he would vote for Cruz in the Utah caucuses on Tuesday, but fell short of endorsing the candidate. Cruz told the press that he appreciates Romney’s support in helping defeat Donald Trump.

Utah Senator Mike Lee has asked a small number of donors to verify that their contributions in 2010 actually came out of their own pockets.

Allegations that Sen. Lee received so called “straw man” donations first surfaced during the investigation of former Attorney General John Swallow. In an unsealed search warrant Jeremy Johnson says that Swallow asked him to help funnel $50 thousand to the Lee campaign by giving money to friends and family who would then donate to Lee. That information led the Alliance for a Better Utah to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission.

Utah Mayors Call for Immigration Reform

A bipartisan group of Utah mayors have sent a letter to Republican Senators Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee, urging them to immediately pass immigration reform legislation. From Fruit Heights to Salt Lake City to St. George, 19 mayors signed the letter. It calls for comprehensive immigration reform, and warns that Utah communities will face significant challenges unless that reform is enacted.

The Gunnison sage grouse is a smaller cousin of the grouse that lives all over the west.  In Utah, it lives only in San Juan County, mostly on private land near Monticello.  There are only about a hundred of them left.

Republican Leaders Critical of Health Care Ruling

Republican leaders in Utah were uniformly critical of Thursday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, saying it threatens the nation's economic recovery and could sharpen the partisan divide.  

In his monthly news conference on KUED, Utah Governor Gary Herbert said, "This has divided the country terribly and taken our eye off the ball on economic recovery.  I do believe, if you want to repeal Obamacare, you need to repeal Obama."
