Local funding for school districts is based on property taxes, but Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, R-South Jordan, worries that system is outdated.

The Utah Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would funnel extra dollars to less wealthy school districts.

Supporters say a $75 million property tax increase will benefit Utah’s public education system and it will likely go further to increase funding in the future.

Utah schools will be getting a little extra boost from the School LAND Trust Program.  The state treasurer announced Friday that school trust fund investments received record earnings, pushing the total value over 1.6 billion dollars at the end of the state’s fiscal year in June.
