West Jordan City

Earlier this month West Jordan voters narrowly approved changing the city’s governmental structure. The city and its elected officials are in for a shakeup when it takes effect in 2020.

Four incumbent mayors in Salt Lake County will be out of the job, if unofficial election results hold. KUER spoke to two of the new mayors-elect who will replace them.

Provo will make history on Tuesday when voters elect their first female mayor since the city's founding 167 years ago. Sherrie Hall Everett, co-vice chair of the Utah Transit Authority, will face Michelle Kaufusi, a Provo School Board member, in the race to replace John Curtis, who's running for Congress. 

Utah's Municipal Election Turnout Lags

On Tuesday November 7th, Utahns around the state will have a chance to vote in local elections. It’s also the time to fill former Congressman Jason Chaffetz’s seat in the 3rd Congressional District. So far, turnout of mail-in ballots is low.

Utahns will vote on new mayors and city council members on Nov. 7, but residents in Blanding will have another item on their ballot: allowing alcohol sales within city limits.

Tuesday is primary election day for the third congressional district special election and some municipalities around the state.

The race for Mayor in Draper City has become contentious, with accusations of lies and negative campaigning. Issues at the center of the race include backlash to a proposed homeless resource center and developing the site of the state prison after it moves further north.

Layton Mayor Steve Curtis Dies

  Residents of Layton are expressing shock after the unexpected death of Mayor Steve Curtis at the age of 58. 

City Council member Mike Bowhuis says Mayor Curtis died in his sleep after enjoying Thanksgiving with his family.  Curtis was just finishing his second term as mayor.  Prior to that, he served ten years on the Layton city council.  Bowhuis says city employees held him in high regard.
