Matheson Addresses Legislature for the Last Time as a Utah Congressman

Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson addressed members of the Utah House and Senate on Thursday.  For now, it is the lawmaker’s last visit to the Capitol as a member of the state congressional delegation.

Congressman Matheson began his speech in the Utah House describing a political atmosphere in Washington, DC that is so partisan that un ending gridlock is the status quo. He says voters are fed up a congress that can’t get work together.

Democratic Representative Jim Matheson’s announcement that he will not run for reelection in 2014 came as a surprise to many and set off a stream of speculation that he has his aim set on a higher office. But, when Jim Matheson first ran for and won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives he never intended to be a lifer. He says the decision to not run for reelection was based on a personal desire to move on with his life, and not because he was afraid of losing to Republican candidate Mia Love.

Mia Love Officially Running for Utah's 4th Congressional District Again

Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love officially declared Saturday that she will run again for the congressional seat occupied by Democrat Jim Matheson. Love's announcement came during a speech to several thousand delegates at the Utah Republican Party's annual organizing convention.

“You and I have some unfinished business with Jim Matheson. So combining my confidence in you delegates, with the inspiration you’ve given back to me, we are stronger than ever, and I am certain, we will win,” said Love to applause.

Matheson Says Both Parties to Blame for Sequestration

Democratic Utah Congressman Jim Matheson says sequestration or sweeping federal budget cuts that went into effect Friday are a collective failure of Congressional leadership in both parties. 

Representative Matheson says everyone in Congress agrees that 85 billion dollars of spending needs to be cut from the federal budget, but he says sequestration is not the way to do it.

Jim Matheson Criticizes Mia Love's Fiscal Record as Mayor of Saratoga Springs

Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson criticized fiscal decisions made by his opponent, Republican fourth congressional candidate Mia Love, Monday, as Mayor of Saratoga Springs.

During a press conference at his campaign headquarters in West Jordan, Matheson criticized Mia Love’s record of increasing taxes while Mayor of Saratoga Springs. He says it shows that her actions don’t match her campaign rhetoric of lowering taxes.

Matheson Endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson got an enthusiastic endorsement from the U-S Chamber of Commerce Tuesday . The organization is launching a voter education initiative to support pro-business candidates.  

The Chamber supports small business and the organization is endorsing lawmakers during this election season that vote at least seventy percent of the time in favor of their issues.  Rob Engstrom is the national political director for the Chamber.  He says Matheson has voted with his group nearly eighty percent of the time.
