The Road Home Shelter in Salt Lake City signed a contract with the state to move every family out of the facility by July 15th or lose funding. Now, the pressure is on to find low-income housing.

Here at The Road Home, 13-year-old Johnathon Whaley rides the big yellow cart he and his mom are using to move their belongings out of the private room they’ve lived in for about eight months. Lorie Tonge and her son have a new one-bedroom apartment-just down the street.

"I'm feeling uplifted knowing that I never gave up," Tonge says.

Draper Mayor Troy Walker rescinded his offer to host a homeless shelter in his city Wednesday night after more than 800 Draper and Bluffdale residents threatened to impeach him, sue the city and even oppose him in his potential November re-election.

Draper City Mayor Troy Walker has offered up two potential locations in his city for a third homeless shelter/resource center. Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams must select a final location by Thursday. He now has nine sites to choose from.

Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams confirmed Wednesday he’s added one more site to the list of potential locations for a new homeless shelter with a capacity of 300 beds. This brings the list of potential sites to seven, including three in West Valley City and four in South Salt Lake. Mayors in both of those cities say they do not support a shelter in their communities.

South Salt Lake Mayor Cherie Wood and West Valley City Mayor Ron Bigelow spoke against a potential homeless shelter in their cities over the weekend. Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams is in charge of selecting a third site for a new shelter. Five potential locations have been identified. Three in West Valley City and two in South Salt Lake. Bigelow says the locations are fraught with problems.

A fence will soon go up between the Road Home shelter and The Gateway mall in downtown Salt Lake City. The Utah Transit Authority says it will pay about $42,000 to install it, while Salt Lake City spokesman Matthew Rojas says the City will pay “a few thousand dollars” to remove a mid-block crosswalk.
