Officials with the Salt Lake County Health Department announced two deaths from hepatitis A this week. They mark the first two fatalities in a months-long outbreak of the disease, but experts say the epidemic is starting to recede.

An outbreak of hepatitis A is spreading in Salt Lake County. But, while cases go up, it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention. One reason for that could be the population it’s primarily affecting: the homeless. Why is this epidemic so bad and what’s being done to stop it?

A hepatitis A scare at a 7-Eleven in West Jordan prompted hundreds of people to call the Salt Lake County Health Department yesterday. Over 300 were advised to get preventative vaccines.
