The Utah Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill changing Utah’s hate crime laws.

Supporters of a new hate crimes bill held a press conference Thursday in response to a statement from the Mormon church opposing it. Republican Sen. Steve Urquhart’s bill would add sexual orientation, gender identity and disability to the list of protections under Utah’s existing hate crimes law.

The owners of the Middle Eastern shop that was vandalized late Tuesday night have wiped away the graffiti, and opened their doors again for business.  While police are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime, the shop is suddenly getting a lot more business.
