The state’s prison relocation commission has voted to move forward with further assessment of six sites located in Salt Lake, Utah, and Tooele Counties.

The consultant hired by the Prison Relocation and Development Authority, or PRADA, held an informal meeting at the State Capitol Thursday.  At the event, people had a chance to voice their opinions on their master plan for moving the State prison in Draper.

Deborah Reithmuller is the founder of the Utah Prison Support Group. She was one of the few people that showed up to weigh in on why she thinks the State prison should not be moved.

Friends and family of Sergeant Derek Johnson were joined by law enforcement officers from all over the state and country for his funeral at the Maverik Center today (Friday). Johnson was killed in the line of duty on Sunday. KUER’s Nicole Nixon reports.

Governor Gary Herbert appointed six members to the newly formed Prison Relocation and Development Authority today. The group is tasked with examining the potential of moving the state prison that is currently located in Draper.

Committee Recommends Moving Prison from Draper

The state’s Prison Relocation Authority Committee has endorsed the idea of moving Utah’s main state prison away from Draper, and that's something the business community there would like to see.

Bill Rappleye, the head of Draper's Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Draper City Council, thinks that's a great idea.  He says it would allow the kind of high-tech businesses that have been locating in Utah County to come into his city.
