Home care workers in Utah and across the country will now be entitled to minimum wage and overtime pay. The US Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez sent a letter to Governor Gary Herbert this week advising him that a US Court of Appeals has upheld the Home Care Final Rule, and that Utah will be required to comply.

Social service groups are calling on Utah lawmakers to rethink earmarks. They are taking their case to the Capitol as the Legislature’s budget-makers write up their priority list for unfunded projects in the coming week .

The Affordable Care Act has given hope to Utahns with disabilities who want to avoid nursing homes. The state’s Disabled Rights Action Committee held a rally in front of the federal building Wednesday calling on Utah’s leaders to support a lesser known provision of the federal health care law that allows citizens to get health care in their own home, instead of a nursing home.

“I’d rather go to jail than to die in a nursing home,” demonstrators chant.
