What's Music Superstar Usher Reading?

LINDA WERTHEIMER, HOST:

All this summer, we've been asking friends of the show - authors, musicians, actors, people passing by - what they're reading.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

USHER: Check one, two, mic check. Check, check it out, on and on and on, rock on to the break-a-break of dawn, it's on.

WERTHEIMER: When we interviewed singer Usher about his latest album, we asked what the soulful superstar was reading.

USHER: "The Narcissistic Family."

(LAUGHTER)

USHER: It's a book that someone gave me.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

WERTHEIMER: And that is where we thought it would end, but just before we said goodbye...

USHER: Speaking of cool books...

WERTHEIMER: Usher, the father of two boys, gave us our own OMG moment when he talked about the books he reads most often.

USHER: If there is any book I enjoy reading to my boys, it is "Amelia Bedelia" books. These are the funniest books ever. We have our reading time before they go to bed, and they absolutely love them. It just - basically it's a play on words. So, if there's something like a specific meaning of something but has a different meaning, she always mixes it up. And they just die laughing. So, it's such cool books. And there's, like, a ton of series of them. You know, I've been actually looking all over the world for these "Amelia Bedelia" books. They kind of republish them but they, I mean, they are, like, maybe, like, 50 years old, man.

WERTHEIMER: The classics. The "Amelia Bedelia" books are written by Peggy Parish and Herman Parish. And if you want to pick up "The Narcissistic Family," it is written by Stephanie Donaldson Pressman and Robert Pressman. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
