Looking southwest into Range Creek Canyon from the Tavaputs Plateau.

By Jeff Rice

Range Creek Canyon, UT – In 2004, Range Creek canyon in southeastern Utah made national news as a major source of archaeological discoveries. Once closed to the public, the canyon is now open to a limited number of visitors and earlier this month, Jeff Rice camped in the canyon with the University of Utah Archaeology Field School. As instructors and students studied the canyon's artifacts, Rice worked to capture another part of the canyon's heritage-- its natural sounds. In the final installment of the Western Soundscapes radio series, he has this audio postcard.

The Western Soundscapes radio series is funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is produced in cooperation with the Western Soundscape Archive at the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library.
