Salt Lake City, UT – According to the U.S. Census, more than 80 percent of Americans live in cities or suburbs. But there are still some people who manage to live away from the traffic and the cement. As part of the Western Soundscapes series, Jeff Rice has this audio postcard from the Owyhee uplands in southern Idaho, where he met rancher Dorothy Payne.

The Western Soundscapes radio series is funded in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is produced in cooperation with the Western Soundscape Archive at the University of Utah's J. Willard Marriott Library.
