Utah House Votes To Remove Sales Tax from Food

By Jenny Brundin

Salt Lake City, UT – After a vigorous, hour-long debate, House lawmakers on Utah's Capitol Hill passed a bill yesterday that would remove the sales tax Utahns pay on food at the grocery store. The move, however, sets up a battle with the Utah Senate. Republican leaders there say scrapping the tax will be too costly. They've proposed instead a smaller tax cut, including giving poorer Utahns an income tax credit for sales tax on food purchases. KUER's Jenny Brundin reports.
