Salt Lake City – Unlike many other medical conditions, diabetes is a self-managed disease. Doctors can tell the patient what to do, but patients themselves have to make the changes in diet and exercise that reduce the risk of complications. Peter Hoogenboom of Salt Lake City was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 14 years old. Bicycling was one of the ways he managed his disease, and he had a dream of taking a cross-country bicycle tour. He got to do it this year, finishing his ride on October 17th. Hoogenboom spoke to KUER's Dan Bammes.
