On Tuesday afternoon, Unified Police Spokesman Justin Hoyal released the identity of the two people allegedly involved in the shooting and death of Draper Police Officer Derek Johnson. They are 35-year-old Timothy Walker and 34-year-old Traci Vaillancourt.
Sergeant Johnson died early Sunday after he was shot in an apparent ambush. Police say Walker is now considered the prime suspect in the shooting and Vallaincourt is considered a victim. Both remain in critical condition at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
The community has responded with flags and ribbons and flowers at City Hall. At a news conference on Monday. Sergeant Johnson’s father, Randy Johnson, thanked everyone for their support.
“As we go throughout the city we see the ribbons on the trees, we see the flags that have been brought to our yard, the many departments that have shown great support to us and our family. The vigil last night, we saw many of the pictures. We weren’t quite prepared. It seems like a long time ago but it was actually just yesterday morning when Derek was killed I the line of duty,” said Randy Johnson.
The Unified police department is handling the investigation. It plans to get a search warrant for the car used by the man and the woman involved. Sheriff Jim Winder says officers are still trying to determine many of the details of what happened. The crime scene at 138th South and Fort Street is open again for traffic.
