U of U Introduces New Offensive Coordinator

Brian Grimmett
Newly hired offensive coordinator Dave Christensen

The University of Utah football team introduced new offensive coordinator Dave Christensen today. Christensen comes to the University of Utah after spending the past five years as the head coach at the University of Wyoming.  Before that, Christensen spent eight years as the offensive coordinator for Missouri. He says he plans on using an offensive system that runs as many plays as possible.

“It’s really based upon execution and scoring points," Christensen says. "If you’re executing and scoring points than as fast as we can absolutely play. But what we don’t want to do is, you know, we can’t go out and go three and out, punt the ball, put our defense on the field, go three and out, punt the ball, put our defense on the field.”

Christensen is Utah’s fourth offensive coordinator in as many years. Last year’s co-offensive coordinators, Dennis Erickson and Brian Johnson, will remain with the team as position coaches. Head coach Kyle Whittingham says the decision to once again change that position was based on the need to get better.

“You don’t need to bash the guys that are running the offense in the past as we go forward because I think we’re on the right track, but we’ve got to get better," Whittingham says. "We still aren’t good enough offensively. I don’t think there is anybody in this building that will disagree with that and our hope is that Dave will help us get to that next level.”

Utah finished this past season with a five and seven record, failing to earn a bowl game appearance for the second straight year.
