U Breaks Ground on New Mid-Valley Health Center in Murray
There’s a new health center coming to Murray. University of Utah Health Care broke ground Monday on a new facility that will provide services from the U’s Moran Eye Center and Department of Dermatology.
It will be called the Mid-Valley Health Center, and it will be just north of Fashion Place Mall, easily accessible from I-15, 215 or 80. Randall Olson, CEO of the Moran Eye Center, says the U campus is not the easiest place for most people in the Salt Lake valley to get to.
“Increasingly our patients are telling us they don’t’ want to have to come there unless it’s for something more complicated or difficult,” says Olson. “So I think it’s recognizing the very real need of the valley, it’s representing what patients want and desire, and it represents the fact that we need to have more space. So rather than trying to create it up on there on the hill, let’s put it where the patients want it, where they like it. That’s the whole concept of bringing this together.”
Unlike the department of ophthalmology’s Moran Eye Center, The U’s dermatology department doesn’t have a landmark facility. But department chair John Zone says there is a great need.
“What we have in Utah is a huge amount of sunlight, a very high incidence of skin cancer. We think that in a facility like this, we can accommodate everyone in this area,” says Zone.
Construction of the Mid-Valley Health Center is expected to be finished in 2015. But that may not be the end of it. Administrators from University of Utah Health Care say they are considering further expansions in Murray.
