The Utah Department of Transportation will begin the construction phase of a highway project between Salt Lake City and Utah County tomorrow. The $450 million highway expansion is scheduled to last three years.

The four-mile project running between State Route 92 and Lehi Main Street will widen I-15 from four to six lanes in both directions around the Silicon Slopes business area. It’s being called the “Technology Corridor Project” and it aims to address congestion in a bottleneck of the highway.

John Gleason is a spokesman with UDOT.

"This is an area that’s experiences a tremendous amount of growth. More so than I think anybody ever anticipated with all of the tech companies that are moving in," Gleason said.

Construction will also include 17 new roadway bridges and a frontage road.

Gleason said that Wednesday is the first day drivers can expect to see lane closures that will impact traffic. The project will also cause narrowed lanes and reduced speed limits in work zones.
