Paying for parking in Salt Lake City just got a little easier. The city announced today drivers can now make parking payments by mobile phone.
The free smart phone application is called QP QuickPay. Shawn Botterill, who works for the payment provider says all drivers have to do, is park their car at a numbered space, and use the app to scan the QR code located on the post.
“You can go about your day and you’ll get a reminder about ten minutes before your time expires asking if you want to extend it or if you’re going to be leaving on time,” Botterill says. “You have the option to extend your time and go about your day and when you leave, you leave.”
Robin Hutcheson is the transportation director for Salt Lake City. She says since the introduction of the blue parking kiosks earlier this year, city officials have found 75 percent of drivers are using their credit and debit cards to pay for parking.
“We now know that this was something that was in really in demand and we think we’re providing a great service,” Hutcheson says. “You can still pay with a nickel at these pay stations, so everything from a nickel to a credit card.”
Mobile phone users without smartphones can create an account and pay by phone via text message or voice pay. More information about the new service or to set up an account can be found at www.parkingslc.com
