Rep. Oda Unveils Bill for Clarity on Special Event Alcohol

Republican State Representative Curtis Oda of Clearfield says a current Utah law controlling alcohol sales at special events lacks clarity so he plans on running a bill to change that.

The problem came up last fall when members of the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control considered denying Snowbird Resort a permit for its annual Oktoberfest. Oda says the DABC has that choice even if all of the requirements for a special events permit are met.

“What it boils down to is, I want to just basically say look, if they qualify, issue it, if they don’t qualify, then don’t issue it,” says Oda, “Deny it.”

Oda says the DABC is also working on changing rules to more clearly define other provisions of the law regulating events by for-profit organizations. He says regulations specify how events must benefit the community as well as do no harm.
