To those of Mayan decent living in Mexico and the United States, today, December 12th is Our Lady of Guadalupe Day. It' s the day worshippers celebrate the anniversary of the appearance of the Virgin Mary to an Aztec Indian near what is today Mexico City. In Salt Lake City, the holiday begins with a mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on December 11th. The next day begins with Las Mananitas - an early morning serenade also held at the church. Producer Beth Hoffman visited the church last year, and today describes the celebration observed by hundreds in our state.
