After counting and verifying all the ballots from last week’s caucuses, Utah Democrats have released their party’s official results. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders came away with 77.19% of the votes and Hillary Clinton had 19.80%.
Chair of the Utah Democratic Party Peter Corroon says that outcome is reflected in the allocation of Utah’s 37 delegates.
“The ultimate delegate count will be 29 for Sanders and 8 for Clinton,” he says. “And that includes the four super delegates which are split two for Sanders and two for Clinton.”
More than 81,000 voters turned out to caucus on March 22nd. Corroon says the Utah Democrats hope to take advantage of some new voters.
“We had 20,000 new voter registrations so 1 out 4 of every one of our votes on caucus night, the person had to register at the same time, so we’ll follow up with them and hopefully keep them involved in the system long-term.”
Corroon also expressed regret that the caucuses had to be run by the political parties since state legislators opted not to fund a primary. He said many voters were unable to vote by mail or an absentee ballot, and were disenfranchised by long lines at the caucuses.
Hillary Clinton now has garnered support from 1,243 pledged delegates and Bernie Sanders has 980.
