Utah has been called the most Republican state in the nation. That's not keeping the Democratic Party from trying to make a contest of it.

Barack Obama's campaign opened its Utah state office in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

"The inter-mountain West could very well determine this election. We're going to be very active in our border states," said Suzanne Gelderman, Utah state director for the Obama campaign.

"We're fighting for every vote in Utah, and we're fighting across the state. My hope is to help move Utah in the same direction as we're seeing a lot of the other Mountain states go," Gelderman said.

Republican John McCain currently leads Democratic Barack Obama in Utah by 19 points. The last time Utah voted for a Democratic presidential candidate was in 1964.
