North Salt Lake City Reaches Deal to Fix Landslide

Brian Grimmett

The North Salt Lake City Council has finally struck a deal that will allow work to begin on permanently stabilizing the hill where a landslide caused severe damage last August.

The agreement to pay for the remediation of the landslide includes contributions from North Salt Lake City, Sky Properties, Kern River Gas and Questar Gas. Darren Shepherd is a spokesman for Questar. He says the company is contributing now because they felt the process has taken too long already.

“We understand that there are a lot of working parts in a situation like this and we just decided it’s best to get in, let’s get the hillside fixed, and then we’ll work on recovering those costs later,” he says.

Both Questar and Kern River have gas pipelines in the affected area.  In a statement sent to KUER, Kern River officials offered similar reasons for contributing money. They want the hillside fixed in order to ensure long-term stability to the hillside where they have a considerable investment.

The repairs to the hill will cost about $2 million. The agreement between the parties stipulates that North Salt Lake and Sky Properties will pay $625 thousand each, Questar will pay $375 thousand, and Kern River will pay a little more than $312 thousand.
