Salt Lake City, UT – Rigoberta Menchu Tum is a Mayan Guatemalan and winner of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize. After her mother, father and brother were murdered during Guatemala's struggle for peasant rights, she dedicated her life to speaking out about her country's indigenous people and their suffering during and after the 36 year civil war. Yesterday, Menchu gave the keynote address for the University of Utah's 25th anniversary celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Menchu spoke earlier to KUER's Jenny Brundin through interpreter, Fernando Rubio of the University of Utah. Like King, Menchu dreams of a better life for her people.
