Mundi Project Putting More Pianos in Public Spaces

The Mundi Project places acoustic pianos in public places

December is turning out to be a good month for the Mundi Project.  It’s a private group that works to provide real pianos for students and others who can’t afford them. This month, it’s putting four more pianos into public spaces around Salt Lake.

HanaJanatova is a piano educator who started the Mundi Project in 2006. She’s playing a baby grand put in the Sorenson Unity Center a few years ago.

Janatova says they’ve found homes for about 120 donated pianos.  Last week, they put one in the Guadalupe School.  Another is going in to the new Glendale Library on Thursday.

“We are also placing a baby grand piano for war veterans at American Legion Post 71," Janatova tells KUER.  "We are also placing another ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ piano at the Midvale performing arts center later this month.”

State Representative Angela Romero is the program manager at the Sorenson Unity Center.  She says the piano in their public space breaks down barriers between people.

Romero says, “Some of the individuals that come here to receive services at the dental -- donated dental – who might have been stereotyped come and sit down and play that piano and just play a beautiful song for everyone.

The Mundi project gets some limited tax funding, but most of its money comes from private individuals and foundations.  There’s more information on its website at mundiproject.org.
