To remember those who gave their lives in the service of this country, the Utah Chapter of the Association of the United States Army held a special memorial service at the Fort Douglas Military Cemetery.
About a 100 people gathered outside of the cemetery to listen to music and remarks meant to shine a light on the men and women who died in uniform. Major General Jeff Burton who is the Adjutant General of the Utah National Guard gave the main address. He said as he prepared for the ceremony, he spent a great deal of time reflecting on the many lost soldiers he personally knew.
“None of them wanted to die," he said. "None of them woke up that morning and said, ‘hey, I want to go die for my country.’ But they were ready to answer that call when it came.”
He also spoke of the solemn responsibility he’s had of informing loved ones that their husband, father, or sister gave their life in the line of duty.
“And I always reflect on that deep sense of loss. That even though we’ll go on with our lives, that family will never have that person in their lives again,” Burton said.
The event concluded with the laying of a memorial wreath, a 21-gun salute, and the playing of TAPS.
