Mormons marching in their Sunday best were a big part of last year’s Utah Pride Parade in Salt Lake City. This year, even more could turn out to support the LGBT community.
The group Mormons Building Bridges will be joined by the group Mormons for Equality. In all, Corey Howard with Mormons Building Bridges expects as many as five hundred marchers.
“LDS people can be active and still openly love and welcome and interact with their LGBT friends and family," Howard tells KUER. " There doesn’t have to be a dividing line between the worlds.”
Many of the marchers will wear their Sunday best for the parade, but Howard says she wouldn’t be surprised to see young people – and some adult leaders – marching in their Boy Scout uniforms.
“If you’re gay, bisexual, transgendered, it shouldn’t matter to be involved in Scouting. The principles hold true, and so, anyone who’s been in the program has benefited and everyone has something to contribute. And if they’re visible in the parade, people will realize just how much that vote would affect, how many people it would affect.”
The leadership of the Boy Scouts of America will vote this week on a policy that would admit gay Scouts but not gay adult leaders.
Utah’s Pride Parade is planned for downtown Salt Lake on Sunday, June 2nd.
