Hiring Our Heroes Reaches Out to Military Personnel and Spouses at Annual Job Fair

Bob Nelson

About 80 Utah employers held a job fair for veterans at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy Wednesday.  Along with vets, they were hoping to reach their spouses and members of the National Guard and reserves.

Sergeant Major Wayne L. Bowser represents of one of the sponsors, “Hero 2 Hired.”  He says knowing where to start is key.

“Major challenges for a lot of service members…many of them are coming off of maybe say a 20-year hitch." says Bowser. "So when they come out, they don’t have a resume’ ready or available to really give to the civilian population,” Bowser says.

Eric Hamilton, ski lift operations manager from The Canyons Resort, says his company and military personnel have common interests that are good for both.

The Canyons employees gather to welcome prospective employees from the military at the Vail Resorts-owned facility in Summit County.

“Right, we feel we have a very unique opportunity to help veterans out who are transitioning. As far as what they want to do for the future, we have six month job openings, seasonal opportunities…great flexible hours for students.”

The annual Hiring Our Heroes job fair has a long list of sponsors including the Utah Department of Workforce Services, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Salt Lake Chamber.
