Group Seeking to Ordain LDS Women Hopes to Attend LDS Priesthood Session

Alicia Geesman

In the past, women have not been welcome at the priesthood session that is part of the general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  But the group Ordain Women is trying to change that.  Its leaders sent a letter to the church asking for 150 tickets for women to attend the session scheduled for October 5th.

They got a letter back from the church’s PR department, refusing the request and saying those tickets are reserved for men.  Kate Kelly, who founded the Ordain Women group, says their plan now is to wait in line for standby tickets the day of the event.

“I anticipate that it will be a very calm, polite gathering," Kelly told KUER.  "We’re just going to be walking down from City Creek Park, where we’re going to be meeting, about a block away.  We’re going to walk down, we’re going to get in the standby line.  And if we’re asked by church security or church representatives to leave, then we will.”

For the first time this year, the church will show the priesthood session on BYU-TV and the Mormon Channel on cable systems as well as streaming it live at lds.org.
