Gardiner Sworn In As Recorder, Promises "A New Day" For The Office

Nicole Nixon

Adam Gardiner, a freshman state representative, was sworn in Friday morning as the new Salt Lake County Recorder. On Thursday night county Republicans chose Gardiner to replace the former recorder, Gary Ott.

Gardiner was unanimously approved by the county council and sworn in on Friday morning. He called it “a new day” for the recorder’s office, which has undergone public scrutiny over the past year as former recorder Gary Ott’s health declined.

Gardiner said Friday he will appoint his own chief deputy, effectively firing  Julie Dole. The former chief deputy and acting recorder was criticized for not speaking up about Ott’s declining health.

“I’m hoping with a change in leadership and a change in administration, we can restore some of that public trust,” Gardiner said.

The new recorder said he’s already looking into upgrading technology in the office, which currently doesn’t accept online payments.

"I’ve already had meetings with the recorder’s online development team about online payments and processes," he said.

"The staff seems very excited about those change, and I think the public will [be] too."

Gardiner says he will resign his seat in the Utah House "soon," so it can be filled before the end of the year. He was elected last year to a seat in West Jordan.
