A Department of Defense lab at the Dugway Proving Ground facility in Western Utah inadvertently sent live samples of anthrax to private labs in nine states.
A spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control sent a statement to KUER confirming that a private lab received a live sample of the anthrax bacteria from a DOD lab. They were supposed to receive an inactive agent. The lab was working with the DOD to develop a tool to help identify biological threats. The CDC statement also says that officials do not believe the general public is at risk.
In a statement from the DOD, Col. Steven H. Warren says their labs have stopped all shipments of these samples pending the completion of an investigation.
