The race for Salt Lake City Council district 4 has a clear frontrunner after Tuesday’s primary election, but who the second candidate will be on the general election ballot is still undecided.
On Tuesday evening less than 40 percent of precincts in Salt Lake City’s fourth district had reported votes. At that point, Derek Kitchen had a clear lead with 36 percent of the vote. The other four candidates had a closer race among themselves: Nate Salazar led with 17 percent, and Miles Petty was only 60 votes behind him with 16 percent. Final results will be available in the coming weeks.
Kitchen says he doesn’t want to worry about who his opponent for the general election will be. He’d rather focus on the issues Salt Lake City is facing.
“I have no reason to focus on anybody except for myself,” he says. “At this point, I’m really doubling down on small business, economic growth, transit, air quality; the things that matter to everyday people.”
Kitchen was at the center of the court case that overturned Utah’s ban on same sex marriage. The general election will take place on November 3rd.
