Central Ninth Market Gets Groundbreaking with RDA of SLC

Brian Grimmett

Salt Lake City officialsand developers broke ground for the new Central Ninth Market at 153 West 9th South Wednesday.

The project will eventually be occupied by six locally-owned small businesses, including Jade Market, which will stand as the first local food market in the neighborhood. D.J. Baxter is the director of the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City. He says the main function of his department is to get to know everything about a neighborhood like this one.

"And to facilitate the type of development that they will love and embrace so the neighborhood itself ensures its success."

Other businesses moving into the new market include Laziz Kitchen, the non-profit organization Local First Utah, Meditrina Small Plates and Wine Bar, relocating from its Ballpark area location, Troubador Salon, and Water Witch, a neighborhood bar.

Baxter says they’re excited about the future of the area.

“There’s a lot more to come; in other properties in that neighborhood'" says Baxter. "We have two more requests for proposals on the street right now for those additional properties.”

Baxter says financing come in part from the Greater Salt Lake Development Corporation, which distributes federal funding, and the RDA’s Revolving Loan Fund.
