Xavier Rudd performs at The Complex on Friday, July 1.

Betsy Burton says, “For anyone who grew up [in Utah]—or who wants to understand what it means to be a child of the fifties, Western, female, and Mormon—The Latter Days by Judith Freeman is, well, revelatory.”  It’s a memoir, a coming of age story, about growing up in a peculiar time, in a peculiar place.

Then, after a long solo career, multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd is fronting a band: Xavier Rudd & the United Nations.  Austen Diamond says now all Rudd needs to focus on is connecting with his audience.  He’ll perform at The Complex on Friday, July 1st.

Veteran indie band Modest Mouse plays at The Great Saltair on Tuesday, June 28th.

And Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals will be at Red Butte Garden on Wednesday, June 29th.

Music heard on this Books & Beats:

1: “Spirit Bird” by Xavier Rudd

2: “Come People” by Xavier Rudd & the United Nations

3: “Never Ending Math Equation” by Modest Mouse

4: “Shine” by Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals
