"Weird Al" Yankovic plays at Red Butte Garden on Friday, August 5.

Maggie O’Farrell packs a lot into her new book.  This Must Be the Place (Knopf) is a coming of age novel, a tale about family, a love story, and a look at what it means to be human.  Betsy Burton says This Must Be the Place does all that, “bringing life into crystalline focus, making sense of it, making us feel with and for the characters, and understand them.”

“Weird Al”Yankovic’s parodies of popular songs have earned him a devoted fan base.  And in some cases, his ironic riffing has surpassed the original material.  He’ll play his whacky versions of everyone else’s hits at Red Butte Garden on Friday, August 5th.

Singer-songwriter Hayes Carll is touring his new record “Lovers and Leavers.”  He’ll be at The State Room on Tuesday, August 2nd.

Music heard on this Books & Beats:

-          “Eat It,” “It’s All About the Pentiums,” and “Tacky” by “Weird Al” Yankovic

-          “The Love that we Need” by Hayes Carll
