Salt Lake City, UT – June 8, 1978 marks a significant milestone for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. President Spender W. Kimball announced the extension of the priesthood and temple blessings to all worth males of the church, including Black men. But church leaders sought to begin healing the wounds of racial tension even before that change. In 1971, church leaders established Genesis, a support group for Black Mormon families adn their friends. On the 30th anniversary of the priesthood revelation, Genesis members from across the country will gather in the Salt Lake Tabernacle to celebrate the change in church policy. As Nkoyo Iyamba reports, some members of Utah's Black Latter-Day Saint community still feel the impact of racism within the church, but find hope and support in Genesis.
