7/07/2011: Cutting for Stone

Salt Lake City, Utah – The physician and professor Abraham Verghese has said that fiction is his first love. That's why he uses Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" to teach end-of-life issues. Though he had written two acclaimed non-fiction books, Verghese wanted to create a novel to "get at the nature of medicine and to search, ultimately for meaning." The result is the medical epic "Cutting for Stone." Abraham Verghese joins Doug to discuss it. (Rebroadcast)
